St. Peter's Basilica and most churches in Rome enforce a real dress code — covered shoulders and knees, no exceptions, even in summer heat. Bring at least one outfit that works for that. Cobblestone streets and constant walking also mean shoes matter more here than almost anywhere else on this list; sandals that look fine in photos often aren't fine after day two.
